Description:
Body Shape is elongated and somewhat depressed (flattened) body, typical of flatheads.Head is large, flattened head with bony ridges and spines; the eyes are placed dorsally.Mouth is large, terminal mouth with villiform (brush-like) teeth.First dorsal fin has 7 or 8 spines.Second dorsal fin contains soft rays, generally 11–12.Anal fin is similar in shape and ray count (usually 11–12 soft rays) to the second dorsal fin.Pectoral fins are broad and fan-shaped.Pelvic fins are positioned below the pectoral fins.Caudal fin is slightly rounded or truncate.
