It exhibits dichotomous branching, with branches that are curved and lie flat, anchored to the substrate by numerous haptera. In a cross-section, the cortex is composed of two layers of pigmented cells, with the outermost cells arranged perpendicular to the surface, and there are also elliptical gland cells present. The medullary cells are large and have thin walls, causing the thallus to collapse and creating a channel-like appearance. The plant is irregularly divided in a dichotomous manner, and the thallus takes on a more cylindrical shape. The plants display colors ranging from greenish-red to purplish-red. The thallus is approximately 3 millimeters thick, and it has a succulent texture.
