The plants are anchored by a round, disc-shaped holdfast. The fronds have a cylindrical shape and exhibit irregular pinnate branching, with branches typically positioned close to each other. In some parts, the branching pattern may appear dichotomous. The branches themselves are not significantly narrowed or have only slight constrictions at the bases of lateral branches. The tips of the branches are pointed. When viewed in cross-section, the central stem consists of 3 to 4 layers of cells. The outermost two layers are quite small, rounded or oblong in shape, and are pigmented. The third and fourth layers of cells adjacent to these are significantly larger, about five to six times in size. These plants have colors that range from light red to greenish-purple.
