These diatoms have no raphes and exhibit elongated, narrow frustules visible in both valve and girdle views. They form ribbon-like colonies with cells connected side by side through small, non-visible interlocking spines at the valve edges. These ribbons are often found attached to submerged plant surfaces. In the girdle view, the cells take on an oblong shape with a central swelling, connecting together to create a ribbon-like colony. The valves are symmetrical, displaying transverse striae, and have a linear, elliptical shape with rounded edges. Frequently, there is a gap between each cell on both sides of the central swelling. Additionally, each cell contains two prominent chloroplasts.
