The body depth is 2.6–3.0 times the standard length (SL), and the preopercle angle has 2–5 enlarged serrae. The pectoral fins have 17–18 rays, and the caudal fin is convex to moderately rounded. There are 52–66 lateral line scales, and lateral body scales are rough without auxiliary scales. The coloration is pale greyish to yellowish brown with five irregular, oblique, dark-edged, brown bands. The first band is on the nape and extends onto the head, the second to fourth bands extend into the dorsal fin, and the last band is on the caudal peduncle.
