It has elongated body and the eyes are relatively large. Snout is short, ranging from rounded to somewhat blunt. The corner of the mouth extends below the vertical line from the anterior half of the fixed eye, much closer to the tip of the snout than to the gill opening. Scales on both sides of the body are ctenoid and there are typically 10 caudal fin rays. In terms of coloration, the eyed side is reddish-brown, occasionally featuring irregular brown-black patches with a prominent large black blotch on the gill cover.
