When viewed from the side (girdle view), these cells are asymmetric, with one side significantly taller than the other. The valve face is rounded, especially near the taller part. In the valve view (top view), these cells feature a central rosette of large holes and a radial pattern of holes with intersecting arcs in the center of the valve. One ring of marginal processes is visible when observed in water mounts. Two larger processes are spaced 135 degrees apart. Additionally, these cells contain numerous disc-shaped chloroplasts.
