The diatom’s cell walls are flat or nearly flat and have a mantle that either slopes steeply or remains straight. These cells house multiple small, rounded chloroplasts. When viewed from the side (in the girdle view), the cells take on a discoid shape with thick walls. In the top view (valve view), these cells lack a central rosette and instead feature coarse areolae, which are small openings arranged in irregular radial rows. Essentially, the frustules, or siliceous cell walls of this diatom species, resemble the shape of coins.
