The valves, which are the components of diatom cell walls, are flat or nearly flat with a steeply sloping or straight mantle. These cells contain several small, rounded chloroplasts. When viewed from the side, in what’s known as the girdle view, the cells appear discoid and have thick walls. In the valve view, there is no central rosette but coarse areolae are present in irregular radial rows.Overall, the frustules, or the siliceous cell walls of diatoms, are shaped like coins.
