The cell walls of this diatom are flat or nearly flat, with a mantle that slopes steeply or remains straight. The cells contain multiple small, rounded chloroplasts. When viewed from the side (girdle view), the cells have a discoid shape and thick walls. When viewed from the top (valve view), the cells do not have a central rosette, but rather coarse areolae (small openings) arranged in irregular radial rows.In essence, the frustules, or siliceous cell walls of diatoms, of this species resemble coins in shape.
