The plants have a color ranging from purplish-red to brown. They are of the cartilaginous type and grow in a creeping fashion, forming densely overlapping masses that spread widely over rocks. They are firmly anchored to the substrate by the tips of their branches, which serve as holdfasts. The branching pattern is either dichotomous or irregular, and the tips of the branches become slender. The main axes have a width of 1.5-2 millimeters, and the branches consistently widen to 3 millimeters or more, creating sublanceolate segments that terminate in sharp points, which are often strongly curved. The inner cortex is characterized by very large cells with thick walls.
