The fish in has a body depth ranging from 2.4 to 2.8 times its standard length (SL). The dorsal profile of the head is convex in front of the dorsal fin, then straight to the tip of the snout. There are two strong canines located anteriorly in each jaw. Unlike smaller individuals, larger ones exhibit rounded caudal fins, with the upper and lower rays forming elongate lobes. There are 12 pectoral fin rays, and the lateral line is interrupted below the posterior portion of the dorsal fin base, with 14–16 pored scales in the anterior portion and 6–9 in the peduncular part. The coloration is variable, ranging from greenish brown to deep reddish brown, usually flecked with white. The fins are typically reddish-brown, and each scale on the sides usually has a blue or brown spot, with these spots extending onto the dorsal and anal fins. Dark brown blotches are also present on the sides.
