Description:
The plants are a dark red to maroon color and they grow along the ground, curving upward. The holdfasts are initially at the end of the segments and bend down ventrally to attach to the substrate. Over time, they become subterminal as the segments grow. New segments originate closely behind the holdfast of the attached segments. Internally, the segments have a medulla with empty spaces. The branching pattern is regular, with repeated dichotomous or trichotomous branching. The fronds are creeping below and, as they grow, they become densely clustered and more upright. They consist of elongated, oval, oblong, or somewhat square-shaped internodes that are cylindrical and compressed at the nodes.
