Order: Calanoida
Family: Candaciidae
Description:
The body of this organism is relatively robust, and when viewed from the top (dorsal view), the cephalosome gives the impression of having “shoulders.” It may also be darkly pigmented. Notably, the cephalosome is separated from the first pedigerous somite, while pedigerous somites 4 and 5 are fused and extended into pointed, often asymmetrical processes, although they may occasionally be rounded. In male specimens, the right first antenna (A1) displays teeth on one or more segments in the bent or geniculate region. The rostrum, a projection on the head, is usually atrophied or reduced in size. In females, the terminal segments of the fifth swimming leg (P5) may have one or more spine-like processes, a finger-like structure, or a single long seta. Setae on the inner lateral margins of these segments may or may not be present. For male individuals, the right fifth swimming leg (P5) typically exhibits a chelate structure or ends in a long, feather-like seta. In female organisms, the urosome is composed of three segments, and the genital somite often possesses spines or is asymmetrical, lacking seminal receptacles. The second somite of the urosome is frequently asymmetrical. In male organisms, the urosome comprises five segments. The caudal rami, located at the rear end of the organism, are short and bear six setae.
