The thalli can either spread out or form tufts. The blades are strap-shaped, thin, and membranous, branching and splitting at the tips in an alternating fashion. Each individual segment is lance-shaped, typically measuring 2-5 mm in length, although sometimes it may appear more linear and tapered, with additional rhizoids at the narrow points. Secondary branches or segments resemble leaves and can emerge from the forked areas or, in rare cases, take on an oval shape with midribs running through the blades. These segments have small subhexagonal cells that form diagonal rows from the midrib to the edge. The plants have a reddish-brown color.
