The tips of the branches and their smaller offshoots bend downwards. The horizontal axes lie flat, attaching to a solid surface using disk-like haptera that form on regular branches. The primary axes have a cylindrical shape, with smaller branches emerging in an alternating pattern in one plane. These smaller branches are somewhat upright, exhibit repeated pinnate branching, and narrow towards their bases. The thallus is characterized by multiple siphons and lacks a cortex. The plant’s color can vary from a dull reddish-purple to a pale brown. These plants grow densely in tufts, forming mats of neatly feather-like thalli on the substrate. The thalli themselves are filamentous in structure.
