This species is characterized by the absence of anal spines and the presence of 13-14 anal soft rays. The head is depressed, and the body lacks large scute-like spines. The infraorbital bones form a strong ridge, which is confluent with the uppermost preopercular spine and typically has 4-6 spines. The ratio of pectoral-fin length to caudal fin length falls within the range of 0.88 to 1.05.
