This species is characterized by a dorsal fin formula of X, I, 26-30; anal fin II, 7; pectoral fin I, 15-16; pelvic fin I, 5; lateral-line scales 47-50; gill-rakers 6-7 + 12-14. It exhibits a large, elongate, and compressed body with an acute snout and a terminal mouth, lacking canine teeth. The mental pores are arranged in three pairs, progressively spaced further apart. Gill rakers are slender and shorter than gill filaments. The caudal fin is nearly truncate and biconcave. Sagitta morphology is moderately elongate and roughly triangular. The swim-bladder is carrot-shaped with 21-31 pairs of arborescent appendages, branched in a fan manner. The posterior appendages are short and at right angles to the main bladder, with disproportionate enlargement in larger specimens.
