Lateral branches tend to emerge approximately every 4-5 axial cells, either taking the place of whorl-branchlets or originating from the lower cells of these whorl-branchlets. The attachment of horizontal axes is facilitated by single rhizoids stemming from the basal cells of the whorl-branchlets, and each rhizoid ends in a finger-like haptera. The cells contain a single nucleus, and in smaller cells, the rhodoplasts elongate, eventually becoming ribbon-like in the axial cells. The plants exhibit a color that ranges from medium to dark red-brown. They are tufted and soft, with prostrate axes supporting erect axes that grow to heights of 4-10 centimeters. The thallus has a uniaxial structure, creeping, and is sparsely branched.
