The head and body display slight compression with a pouch-like cavity at the dorsal margin of the operculum. Eyes are not present and there are fang-like teeth on the jaws. Scales cover the entire body including certain areas on the head, cheek, and opercle. Pelvic fins have innermost rays connected by a membrane for approximately one-third to one-fourth of their length and there are 14–18 rays in the pectoral fin. Overall coloration is uniform and pinkish.
