The cells have a drum-like shape, with a flat top (valve face) and a curved side (mantle). They are typically found alone and have numerous chloroplasts located around the edge of the cell. Sometimes, a cytoplasmic bridge can be seen connecting two cells. The cells have a belt around the middle (cingulum), which is made up of either two or three bands. The top band is relatively wide (valvocopula) and is often damaged during the cleaning process. The second band is much narrower and has a noticeable ligula that fits into the opening of the valvocopula. The top of the cell (valve) is round and has a central annulus that can be either clear or covered in small holes (areolate). The areolae on the valve face are organized into sectors, which are separated by complete radial rows of areolae. Towards the distal end of these rows, there is a single opening of the labiate process. The areolae are more densely packed on the side of the cell (mantle) than on the top.
