Class: Malacostraca
Order: Decapoda
Family: Sergestidae
Description:
Acetes japonicus belongs to the decapod family Sergestidae and is characterized by individuals that can attain a size of up to 3 centimeters. These creatures employ drag-powered swimming as their primary mode of locomotion, using their appendages and body shape to generate thrust and move through the water. The determination of the sex of adult Acetes erythraeus relies on specific anatomical features. It is based on the presence or absence of one clasping spine on the lower antennular flagellum, as well as the identification of coupling folds on the petasma, a characteristic structure in male crustaceans. In the case of Acetes japonicus, sexual differentiation is based on the presence or absence of two clasping spines on the lower antennular flagellum and the particular form of the third thoracic sternum. These distinct features help distinguish the sexes of this species.
