Body is highly elongated, fusiform and exhibits minimal lateral compression. Teeth are robust, triangular, compressed, and finely serrated. Gill rakers are not present.There are two small flaps between the pelvic fins. In terms of coloration, the head and body display an iridescent blue-green hue dorsally, transitioning to a silvery shade below. In live specimens, it is common to observe 24–30 dark blue vertical bars on the sides, extending below the lateral line.
