Description:
The cells arrange themselves into chains, which can take on coiled, curved, or straight configurations. Long setae extend from the corners of these cells. A number of individual species are discovered in Monterey Bay. This genus of diatoms is among the largest, comprising around 400 species, with the majority inhabiting marine environments. Some of these species have the capacity to produce resting spores and/or auxospores.
