Description:
Oscillatoria is a genus of cyanobacteria characterized by unbranched filamentous structures that are enveloped in mucilaginous sheaths. This genus derives its name from the oscillating motion displayed by its filaments, which can slide back and forth to position the colony toward a source of light. Oscillatoria has the capability to produce both anatoxin-a and microcystins, which are associated with certain toxins.
