The fronds are densely clustered and branch out at their upper tips. The cortex consists of 1-2 layers of cells, with the cells in the outer layer being elongated, and those in the inner layer being radially compressed. In the medulla, there are large central cells. Cupola-shaped cystocarps are scattered across the mature regions of the thallus. These plants have a bushy and succulent appearance, and they range in color from dark green to a deep reddish-black. They are cylindrical in shape and display repeated dichotomous branching at the upper portions of their stems.
