First dorsal fin spine is either equal to or longer than the second spine and they are well-separated. The dorsal fin is composed of 9–11 spines and 9–13 soft rays, while the anal fin has 2 spines and 8–11 soft rays. There are 15–19 gill rakers on the first gill arch. The coloration is mottled light grey, with a pale ventral side. There is a large black spot distally on the anterior part of the soft-rayed section of the dorsal fin. The anal and paired fins are dark brown towards the tips and the inner surface of the pectoral fins is pale without distinctive markings. The caudal fin typically displays two broad dark bars.
