The body is compressed and has an oval shape. Head is raised and humped, particularly in males, who exhibit a noticeable protuberance or bony hook on the forehead. There is a single dorsal fin with 5–7 rudimentary spines at the front, succeeded by 2 well-developed spines and 12 to 14 soft rays. The coloration is semi-transparent pinkish-white with silvery reflections present anteriorly on the head and body.
