Description:
Dorsal spines: 7 in total; Dorsal soft rays: 10-12 in total; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 9-11; Vertebrae: 26. Upper 3-4 pectoral fin rays are free. Body color is a pale gray. The operculum displays 5 small blue spots interspersed with brownish-red spots. There are 5 vertical rows of white spots on the pectoral fins. The anterior tip of the first dorsal fin is bright yellow with the 4th spine being the longest. Predorsal scales are cycloid and the trunk has ctenoid scales. Mouth has an overhanging snout and the lips are greatly thickened. Cheeks and operculae lack scales. In females, the pelvic and anal fins are not as darkly pigmented as in males.
