The body is elongated and moderately flattened. The opercle lacks a free flap of skin. Upper jaw is protractile with the posterior end not reaching the anterior edge of the eye. The preopercular spine has a slightly up-curved main tip and five slightly recurved dorsal tips at its dorsal margin. Opercle and subopercle are spineless and the first spine of the first dorsal fin is not filamentous. The first dorsal fin consists of flexible spines with the first ray of the second dorsal fin larger than the first spine of the first dorsal fin. The first dorsal fin has four spines while the second dorsal fin has nine rays and there are 16 soft rays in the pectoral fin. Pelvic soft ray count is five and there are eight anal soft rays. Caudal fin rays are mostly branched, distally convex and not elongated. The lateral line is simple. Head and body are a sandy yellow color, covered with numerous small white spots. The first dorsal fin is plain black and the ventral side is whitish.
